Top 5 Interactive Features of Boom™ Cards for High School Science Classes

As a high school science teacher, I didn’t think Boom™ Cards were for me and my students. Honestly, I didn’t know a lot about them. I started searching for decks and playing preview cards and quickly realized how great these interactive digital task cards would be in my science classes.

I have been a high school science teacher since 2017. I’ve been mainly teaching physics and chemistry but also spent years with biology and physical science.

Boom™ Card features that enhance learning and provide engaging interactions

So here I am…learning about Boom™ Cards and the platform, creating and assigning them to my students. And let me tell you, they are excellent. There are so many ways that students can interact with lesson content. It makes learning these upper-level science classes a little more fun and accessible.

  1. Boom™ Cards have moveable items

It's truly an interactive feature. Students can drag and drop vocabulary terms, match them with definitions, or label images. There is even one for vectors where students can move rulers around the map to locate the final position.

  2. Boom™ Cards have audio support

Do students need help with the reading? Okay, Boom™ Cards has a feature for that. Students click the speaker button on the card to have the question or reading passage read to them. This feature is excellent for improving student comprehension of the question or task.

  3. Boom™ Cards are self-checking

It's a teacher's favorite right here. Students are provided with immediate feedback regarding a question or topic. It’s almost like a built-in error analysis check for students. They can rethink their response and enhance their understanding. Visual feedback is provided with a green circle for correct answers and a red circle with a line for incorrect answers. Get an answer right and hear the ‘ding’ sound. Answer incorrectly and hear the ‘whoops’ sound.

  4. Boom™ Cards have buttons to click

Easily navigate the deck using the navigation buttons at the bottom of the card. You can proceed forward by clicking ‘Next’ or go back to a previous card by clicking ‘Back’ or access the main menu for other activities within the deck by clicking on ‘Main Menu.’ Even the Main Menu is a list of buttons!

  5. Boom™ Cards can be printed

Yep, digital interactive task cards can also be printed. This feature is perfect for students with accommodations requiring larger text or the ability to highlight. This feature is also a lifesaver when you want to assign a deck for homework but a student does not have a device with internet access at home. Print the deck and have them complete it with “old school” paper and pencil. While not all decks lend themselves well to this feature, most do, and it’s a great option to include and support all students. You can find more about printing Boom™ Cards here in this blog post.

Features that deserve honorable mention

  • Boom™ Cards have fill-in-the-blank

  • Boom™ Cards play videos

  • Boom™ Cards record voices

  • Boom™ Cards can be drawn on

Which features work for upper-level science?

All of them! Each of these features can be used depending on the topic being assessed. Understand that not all Boom™ Card sellers implement these features. Play the full-sized preview of the deck you’re interested in before you buy it.

If you are creating your decks for your class, you can pick and choose features that work best for your students. However, you cannot select features for decks purchased on the Boom™ Learning platform; only the deck authors can do that.

Head over to the Boom™ Learning website and try some Free Boom™ Cards. You can add these free decks to your library and play immediately.

How do I get these features in the Boom™ Cards I want to use?

Make some decks to play with your kiddos to ensure you get precisely what you want and what your students need. There is a learning curve when creating Boom™ Cards, but learning, growing, and getting creative is fun.

If you’re new to the platform, use this link to get a 10% discount for individual subscriptions (I may earn a referral prize when you use my discount).
